Basia is part of the Edinburgh School of Icon Painting and has led several popular icon writing retreats here which have included complete beginners as well as those who have tried icon painting before. As well as attending the workshops with Basia everyone is also welcome to join in the daily prayer life of Craig Lodge.
Icon of St. Paul the Apostle, retreat 2016
Over five days of the retreat we will be working on the image of St. Paul. Participants will choose one of provided images. We will go through all stages of process of icon painting according to all traditional principles at the same time trying to find our own way of painting. In this process we will try to establish a connection with the image. Icon painting is a spiritual practise as much as an artistic one. Studying technique and history is as important as developing a deep connection with the Divine.
We will be working in egg tempera technique which has been used in iconography for centuries.
We will learn and explore:
- composition used in icon painting,
- icon styles including Byzantine and Russian,
- how to prepare egg yolk binding medium,
- make your own paints from dry pigments,
- how to work with thin layers,
- egg tempera brush work,
- gold gilding.
Materials will be available to buy on your arrival but payment needs to be made before the retreat. Please contact Basia to arrange this as soon as you book your space.
